Dental Implants
Dental implants are one of the most exciting and progressive fields of dentistry right now. With success rates becoming higher and cost lowering dental implants are being used to solve many different dental problems.
A dental implant is a small screw, usually made of titanium, which is implanted into the bone of the upper and/or lower jaw. After placement the implant will bond to the bone and is available to be used for support of various prosthetics. Because the implant incorporates into the tissue of your mouth strength and stability of a replaced tooth are better with an implant than any other option. The most common uses for implants are replacement of missing teeth with crowns or stabilizing a loose complete denture.
Replacement of teeth:
Implants are used to replace single and multiple missing teeth by acting as anchors for crowns and/or bridges. An implant can be placed in the space of a single missing tooth and a crown attached to it to completely restore chewing function and esthetics. Due to the strength of the bond to the jawbone implants can also be used as anchors for a multiple tooth prosthetic that serves to replace many missing teeth, even a complete top or bottom.
Stabilization of dentures:
Stabilization of dentures by using dental implants is a great way to get more chewing force and keep dentures from flopping around in the denture wearer’s mouth. After implants are placed and healed the dentures are attached to the implant by the dentist. The attachment will hold the denture in place and will allow much more force to be applied when biting and chewing. This procedure is most common for attachment of lower complete dentures but can be used for attachment of complete upper and all partials as well. There is no greater before and after result than going from a loose, ill fitting lower denture to a tight, implant retained denture.
