Orthodontics in Jonesboro, AR
Braces are one of the most exciting and visually satisfying things we do for our patients. There are many different reasons for needing orthodontic treatment or “braces,” and many different ways to go about treatment.
We partner with great orthodontic specialists to ensure optimal results with all of our patients who want or need braces. Let’s start with the main reasons you or your child might need braces.
Why do I need braces?
Because teeth don’t always come in straight – As kids grow up, a lot of things are happening in their mouths. From around the ages of five to thirteen, we see them lose all twenty baby teeth and get almost all of their permanent teeth. Then, we watch their jaws grow fast to make room. This doesn’t always happen in perfect harmony. The poor alignment of teeth is sometimes nothing more than a cosmetic concern. In some situations, however, it can cause damage to the teeth and jaws. If not corrected, the result may be cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. Because we see children twice a year for checkups, we are able to follow their development and recommend orthodontic treatment when appropriate. Early intervention is critical to successful orthodontic treatment as it allows us to use the ongoing growth to our advantage.
Because your teeth were straight, but have gone back – We frequently see people who have worn braces in the past and have since lost or broken their retainer. The teeth that were straight and beautiful have slowly crept back toward where they were before. Most often, in these cases, the second treatment is quicker and easier than the first time. To prevent future relapse, we use a combination of bonded and invisible nighttime retainers after treatment is complete.
To get ready for a smile makeover or to replace missing teeth – Complex treatments such as smile makeovers or dental implants to replace missing teeth can be made much easier by repositioning some teeth beforehand. By moving teeth, we are able to get the spacing needed to create the most visually pleasing results. We are also able to create space for an implant where it is needed. This type of orthodontic treatment is usually done as a preliminary step and can take less time than a traditional case.
What if I don’t want metal braces?
If you need orthodontic treatment and don’t want to wear metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners may be the solution for you. Invisalign is a series of clear retainer-like aligners that are worn instead of traditional braces to straighten teeth.
Invisalign gives you the freedom to smile without showing a mouth full of metal. It also lets you enjoy your meals without the challenge of traditional braces. Invisalign is not for everyone, but your doctor would be happy to discuss this with you at your next visit.
What’s the next step?
If you are interested in braces or Invisalign, call our Jonesboro dental office to schedule an orthodontic consultation with our doctors. You can also ask your doctor during your next check-up visit.
During the consultation, we will discuss your goals and expectations. We will also evaluate the position of your teeth and supporting bone and may take diagnostic x-rays, models of your mouth, and photos to properly plan your treatment options. With all of this information, we can then discuss with you what is best for you and the procedures, time, and home care needed for success.
