As a parent, you strive to help your child make healthy food choices. You try to choose foods that support their general health. But you may not be aware of common foods your child eats that are the worst choices when it comes to their oral health.
Jonesboro children’s dentist Dr. Burris knows that when you’re armed with information, you can make healthier choices that support your child’s oral health. We’re sharing some of our picks for the worst foods and drinks for your child’s oral health and options you can choose instead.
Breakfast cereals – Your kids love the sweet taste, and that’s the problem. Those cereals are so filled with sugar that you may as well serve your child cake for breakfast! And cereals labeled ''whole grain'' can actually be full of sugars with only a bit of fiber added. Before you make a choice, read the ingredient label to ensure that sugar is not in the top three ingredients. Then look for a cereal containing three or more grams of both protein and fiber per serving.
Sugary drinks – As a parent, you’re probably aware of drinks like colas and fruit punch that are loaded with sugar. You may think that flavored juices are a better choice. However, these drinks also contain empty calories and tons of sugar. In fact, some of these drinks contain even more sugar than sodas! A better choice would be 100 percent fruit juice.
Hard candies and lollipops – You want your kids to enjoy a sweet treat every so often, but just be aware that hard candies and lollipops are essentially just sugar and artificial flavors and coloring. They harm your child’s teeth because they linger in the mouth for extended periods of time, leading to decay. Hard candies are really bad news for kids with braces, as these may become damaged or dislodged. Get your child used to sugar-free treats that still taste sweet but don’t damage their teeth.
