Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry focused on the treatment of dental and facial irregularities to improve not only a patient's oral health but their appearance and overall quality of life by correcting issues like misaligned teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.
Why Is Orthodontics Important?
Orthodontics plays an important role in oral health and overall quality of life by:
- Correcting bite problems, which improves chewing function and, by extension, digestion and nutrient absorption
- Fixing crooked or misaligned teeth, making them easier to properly clean, thus reducing the risks of tooth decay and gum disease
- Making it easier and more comfortable to speak clearly
- Boosting self-confidence and self-esteem by improving the appearance of one's smile
Types of Orthodontics
There are a variety of different orthodontic treatments, each suited to particular needs and goals. The most common include:
- Traditional braces - metal brackets and wires that are attached to teeth and gradually move them into alignment
- Ceramic braces - similar to metal braces, but with brackets made of a clear or tooth-colored material
- Lingual braces - also similar to traditional braces, but with the brackets attached to the back of the teeth
- Clear aligners - custom-made, clear mouthpiece-like plastic trays that gradually move teeth into alignment
- Palatal expanders - used to widen the upper jaws of patients with narrow palates in order to create space for teeth and improve bite alignment
Who Is (and Isn't) a Good Candidate for Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics, while potentially beneficial for patients of all ages, is unfortunately not appropriate for everyone, namely patients suffering severe oral health issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Patients who are deemed unsuitable candidates for orthodontic treatment do have alternative options for cosmetically and structurally improving their smiles. These include porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and dental crowns.
Of course, the ultimate decision as to whether an individual is a suitable candidate and the specific treatment that's right for them lies with a qualified dentist or orthodontist.
