Guide to Good Brushing
- Use a soft-bristled brush. Medium or firm bristles can actually damage your enamel or your gums.
- Brush in a gentle, circular motion. Don’t scrub back and forth.
- Brush for at least two minutes, spending 30 seconds on each quarter of your mouth. Apps for your smart phone can help you time this.
- Angle your brush so that the bristles gently massage your gumline. This helps to dislodge plaque and other particles hiding just beneath the gumline.
- Brush at least two times per day.
Guide to Good Flossing
- Choose a floss type that is appropriate for your needs. If you have widely spaced teeth, you may benefit from a tape or ribbon type of floss. If your teeth have minimal space between them, look for a floss designed to slide into these tight spots.
- Use about two feet of floss. Loosely wrap the floss around the middle finger of each hand.
- Work around your mouth, adjusting the floss so you are always using a clean section.
- Slide the floss between your teeth, gently pressing into the gum tissue at the base of each tooth. Do not snap the floss or work quickly since this can cause injury.
- Floss before you brush at night before bed.
