Our dentists offer two types of dental fillings at Dental Solutions - silver amalgam metal fillings and tooth-colored composite resin fillings. Here's what you should know about each type.
Silver Amalgam Fillings
A tried and true filling that provides durability, metal amalgam fillings are ideal for teeth in the back of your mouth that take the brunt of your chewing force.
Pros: Metal fillings provide strength and durability and work well for larger areas of tooth decay.
Cons: Amalgam fillings aren't as aesthetic as tooth-colored fillings. They also tend to break down over time due to temperature changes in your mouth, causing them to expand, contract, and pull away from your tooth.
Composite Resin Fillings
Composite provides durability by being bonded directly to your tooth and aesthetics because they're made of glass and resin particles that our dentists can customize to match your tooth.
Pros: Direct bonding provides excellent durability. No one will notice your tooth-colored filling thanks to its superb aesthetics. Tooth-colored fillings also require the removal of less natural tooth structure for placement, so they preserve more of your natural tooth.
Cons: Composite resin fillings are sometimes less durable for larger areas of tooth decay. They're also typically more expensive than metal fillings.
